Team Formation

There are many ways to go about forming teams for the "What's New" and Team Case presentation assignments, none of which are absolutely perfect.

We'll try the following process:

  • In the first class, we will hand out a set of case descriptions, outlining the cases that will require team coverage, and a brief description of the key points in each case, along with a team signup sheet for everyone in the class….
  • By no later than the second class - please bring the sheet back - filled out by the team leader, or by you individually if you have not found a team. The sheet will ask for information including:
  • If you have formed a team, please let me know the team members, and your team's case preferences-First, Second, Third choices - etc..
o If you are not part of a team, let us know you are unattached, and your preference for cases- First, Second, Third choices -- etc.
  • During the second class we will finalize team formation, along with cases that will be covered by each team.

We'll try to accommodate your preferences as best we can - but in a seven week class arrangement, need to finalize teams and assignments rather quickly.

Case Team Presentation

Important note: Because of the compact, 7-week structure of this course, our time for case presentations will be shorter than usual:

  • 20 minutes -- team presentation

  • 20 - 30 minutes -- Q&A

  • 10 - 15 minutes -- key takeaways / wrap-up.

It's exceptionally important that case teams are well prepared, and can deliver case questions on their key recommendations, in no more than 20 minutes. We'll need to hold this clock time fairly tight, to allow us to cover the appropriate amount of material in the class.
Presentation format

The case team can present as a team, or with a leading spokesperson, in the usual fashion - but should be able to deliver their key points on the case in 20 minutes or less. PowerPoint can and should be used.
" Each case presentation should address the key financial issues in the business situation, as well as other elements of business strategy.
Assignment deliverables:

Each team should provide a copy of any visual materials, PowerPoint's, etc., they've prepared in summarizing the case,

Important---Since class discussion time will be abbreviated, case grades will also be dependent on a "Case Summary Report" -- not to exceed 8 pages -- which must include:

  • Brief synopsis of key facts (Not a repeat of the case):

  • Your overall recommendations

  • Answers to key case questions -- assigned for each case

  • Key insights/learnings gained from the case

Final thought…

A key objective of this course is to prepare each of the participants to be "action learning coaches" for their businesses, teams, and enterprises. Please visualize yourself playing that role as you deliver the case presentation. Practice using the tools, templates, and frameworks from the class as you conduct your analysis.

Pay attention to the financials!

An important part of any recommendation should be that it does contribute to the bottom line profitability of the firm. eBusiness and digital technologies can be powerful in saving money, building efficiency, and building and delivering new value. Digital technologies can also be an incredible waste of time and effort. An important part of being a good action learning coach is discerning the difference between the two, and including that analysis in your recommendations.

What's New Class - Assignment

An ongoing survey of "what's new" in the emerging world of digital business will be part of every class.

This assignment will involve Class Teams surveying media which cover digital business, as well as your own favorite sites on the emerging digital world, and summarizing key points - take aways - insights - in a single page word document, which will be posted on our angel site throughout the semester.

We will set up team class session assignments on Monday, August 26, 2002.

Your assignment will be to provide a single-page overview, and to deliver a 15-minute class presentation which follows this format:

" What's happening - what's new-hot?
" Your source?
" What are the real implications for business leader?
